SO COOL

All these years he’s been so careful, but now he’s willing to take a chance. Because he’s found someone who wants to know. Someone he wants to tell.

Anna recommends…REACHED by Ally Condie!

Though there were so many wonderful books published by Penguin this year, and frankly I find it incredibly hard to choose just one favorite, the first thing that came to mind when we conceived of this project was Reached by Ally Condie. Penguin acquired Matched in 2009, right about when I started working here, and I read it earlier than almost anybody in the world, which is such a crazy thing to think about a book that has blossomed into a genuine literary phenomenon! So in many ways, I’ve been with Cassia, and Cassia has been with me, since the very beginning, and I was both sad and excited when the manuscript of Reached finally landed in my inbox—sad because it was the last book, but excited because I knew that Ally was going to blow me away with her gorgeous writing, fascinating characters, true romance, and amazing plot revelations. And I was right! (As always.) If you haven’t had a chance to dive into this amazing series yet, there’s no time like the present—you have some time off for the holidays. USE IT WISELY!

Writing, painting, singing- it cannot stop everything. Cannot halt death in its tracks. But perhaps it can make the pause between death’s footsteps sound and look and feel beautiful, can make the space of waiting a place where you can linger without as much fear. For we are all walking each other to our deaths, and the journey there between footsteps makes up our lives.

There is something extraordinary about the first time falling. But it feels even better to find myself standing on solid ground, with someone holding on to me, pulling me back, and know that I’m doing the same for her.

And it strikes me that this is how writing anything is, really. A collaboration between you who give the words and they who take them and find meaning in them, or put music behind them, or turn them aside because they were not what was needed.
